I began asking, “How do you treat estrogen dominance symptoms naturally?” when I found out the cause of endometriosis was estrogen dominance. I googled “estrogen dominance symptoms” and found I had over a third of the 40 symptoms. I discovered Female Balance by NOW to dramatically improve my health after experiencing symptoms of estrogen dominance for several years.
Treat Estrogen dominance naturally with Diet changes
For 11 years now, we’ve followed the Blood Type Diet. Recently in the past 3 years it’s risen to a more detailed diet called the Genotype Diet which is based not just on your blood type but your genetics as well.
I believe that this is the reason I never gained a lot of weight, which is a symptom of estrogen dominance and endometriosis. I found the wheat/white flour in breads, pastas, cakes and boxed foods instantly packed the pounds on me. Taking the weight off is next to impossible.
Even taking the Female Balance product, I still have to be cautious about what I eat. I struggle some with ovulation still. My pain varies from month to month depending on what I’ve eaten. I can’t eat ANY wheat products at all. Instead, we use spelt, a cousin to wheat, but I can only have it occasionally.
Sugar is a HUGE no-no. Think about how much you eat that contains sugar. At first most people think they don’t get much sugar. Well, you’re probably thinking candy as sugar. What about your coffee? Donut? Soda? Ice cream? Cake? Breads (yes, they have sugar… read your labels), the list is endless. Only fruits with natural sugars are safe, and depending on your blood type, some of those should be avoided.
Why is estrogen dominance a problem in the first place?
If I eat healthy, natural food why do I have it?
Everything we buy at the store from the dairy products, to eggs, to all meats are so laced with hormones they destroy our bodies. If you are a meat eater, buy hormone/pesticide-free and grass-fed meat. Since it is so expensive, we have started raising our own beef and mutton.
Possible symptoms of estrogen dominance
- Acceleration of the aging process
- Allergies, including asthma, hives, rashes, sinus congestion

- Copper excess
- Decreased sex drive
- Depression with anxiety or agitation
- Dry eyes
- Early onset of menstruation
- Endometrial (uterine) cancer
- Fat gain, especially around the abdomen, hips and thighs
- Fibrocystic breasts
- Foggy thinking

- Uterine cancer
- Uterine fibroids
- Water retention, bloating
- Zinc deficiency
If you think that you might have endometriosis, before surgery consider a natural remedy to cure estrogen dominance symptoms. While I am not giving medical advice, what worked for me was a change of diet, an excellent EFA supplement, and NOW’s Female Balance.
I discovered Female Balance by NOW to dramatically improve my health after experiencing symptoms of endometriosis for several years. This answered my questions of “How do you cure endometriosis naturally?”
I began to experience pain last September that was worse than I had experienced for the last 5 years. I worried about this being more serious than I had first expected. I met two people that same year with endometriosis. One friend had surgery and was still in a lot of pain. Doctors had not decided what to do with my other friend because a major artery running through her uterine area connects to her intestines, making surgery dangerous.
Discovering the cause of endometriosis
Because these stories were so fresh in my mind I googled “what are the symptoms of endometriosis.” I was surprised that I had five of the six symptoms listed on the website I found. They said the only cure was menopause. Well, Dearie, that’s probably still 15-20 years away for me. I can’t wait that long.
Looking at the two ladies I’d met last year, I didn’t want surgery. Yet I knew I couldn’t let it continue to a dangerous level. I wanted a natural remedy these symptoms. I searched “what causes endometriosis?” Endometriosis develops when a woman’s hormones are not balanced.
Discovering a cure for endometriosis
I read about Female Balance by NOW being able to reverse endometriosis and allow my body to start working correctly. One source I read said to take wild yam (which Female Balance has in it as well as some other herbs to help regulate this problem) for about 6 months and you should be good. One should not take it during the week of menstruation.
Rather than taking the dosage on the label (one pill three times per day), I took only one per day. I was especially looking to get rid of the pain. I was tired of always being in pain. It drains me so much I can hardly do anything that involves bending over because it kills my back. I was always exhausted and fell asleep if I were to sit down on the couch.
The most painful time of the month for me was ovulation not menstruation. When I ovulated I’d find myself looking for a pain killer because my ovaries and uterus hurt so badly. The very first month on Female Balance, I was so relieved to go through ovulation pain-free!
Weight loss while treating endometriosis naturally
While I was only taking Female Balance for the endometriosis and estrogen dominance symptoms, one Sunday morning a lady at church says, “You look skinnier. Have you been losing weight?” I had noticed I had thinned out.
I said, “You know, that’s been happening but I don’t know why. My hair stopped falling out too.” I thought it was maybe the essential fatty acids (EFA) from fish oil I was taking. My midwife had recommended EFA’s when I told her what I was suffering. Because I was no longer in any pain, I didn’t stop to think it was the Female Balance still doing its job.
In a month, I went from size 12 back down to size 10. I’ve continued to stay at size 10 in spite of the holidays. Usually, I graduate to a size 14 every year from the holidays until spring.
Hair regrowth while treating endometriosis naturally
Before using the Female Balance supplement, I would loose a glob of hair every shower. When I brushed my hair, I lost enough to supply my husband with a wig… and a beard to boot! My braid used to be the thickness of two drumsticks (the rhythm instrument, not the chicken or turkey kind). It became as thin as a pencil. It looked scrawny, dry, flat, and had lost its shine.
After taking Female Balance for 4 months, my hair is twice as thick now.
Other improvements from natural treatment of endometriosis
I have more energy. I’m not in constant pain. Menstruation is normal (did you know that starting menstruation with brown blood is a sign of endometriosis? I’ve had that since I began at age 12!).
I’d been having a lot of asthma attacks for no reason back in September. Generally for me, an asthma attack came at the end of an allergy attack. However, without having any allergy problems, I’d find myself wheezing. Again, this is a symptom of estrogen dominance.
Apparently many people gain a lot of weight with a hormonal imbalance. I had tried taking off the pounds I had suddenly gained that year. For a month, I jogged on the treadmill but lost nothing.
Before surgery, consider if a natural remedy to cure endometriosis symptoms might work for you. While I am not giving medical advice, what worked for me was a change of diet, an excellent EFA supplement, and NOW’s Female Balance. Read more on estrogen dominance…
If you are thinking of starting your own website, I have two words for you: BlueHost and WordPress. A lot of homesteaders, health nuts, and homeschoolers want a site and ask, “How do I get started with a website?” Some want to blog, others want to start an online business. You can do both very easily.
Why I like BlueHost.
These people are great. Not only does the cost beat almost all the competition, the services do more than I need. For free, I can do all the email and auto-responders I want. I also do not have to pay extra for Attracta which has helped me get ranked way up in Google on some of my sites (google “Devotions with Dad” and you will see my site in the top few listings).
Bluehost helped me learn how to get started with a website and I’ve learned a lot just experimenting with the many services they offer. They also give me access to statistics in incredible detail. I can see how many computers have visited my site, how long they stayed, and how many pages they viewed. I can check what keywords are bringing visitors in from the search engines.
With one click, I can install WordPress on any domain I own and on any sub-domain I choose. If I wish to create a new sub-domain, I can do so at no extra cost. For example: healthandhomestead.danieljkoren.com.
Here’s some of what BlueHost supports:
- Ruby on Rails
- Trendy Site Builder
Why I like WordPress
It is free. It is powerful. Now, they tell me the best thing is Joomla, but I do not have the time to learn all that stuff (BlueHost does offer it as a free installation, too). WordPress can get you up and running in a day—all you have to do is add content. I add a page or a couple posts everyday and have yet to complain about the process. Looking back, I’m amazed at how much I have learned since I got started building websites.
I took a class in website development and found it all very complicated and confusing—and that was using DreamWeaver, a top line website program from Adobe. WordPress, however, offers all kinds of great templates that are way better than anything I could dream up in DreamWeaver.
Easily upload video, audio, and documents to share with your visitors. Type and edit your content in the administration panel. Manage your comments with the free plugin Akismet, and keep your content findable with SEO Ultimate (search engine optimization). I also highly recommend Jolliprint for pages you want users to able to save as a .pdf or print off. Choose from a thousand themes to match your needs or personality. If you have $60 to spare, you can get access to unlimited downloads on over 5,000 themes, too.
Other web services I recommend
I picked up a free account with Google Adsense which gives me about a $1 every time someone clicks on a Google link. The ads match the page’s content or the users interests.
For blogs people want to receive by email, I use FeedBurner. This free service from Google helps me manage my subscribers and even add Adsense to the feed. This, of course, works with RSS and Atom feed readers—which I find many more people using than the email.
Commission Junction is another great free tool if you want to make some money through affiliate marketing. However, you will need a lot of traffic before you actually get anyone clicking through and buying stuff.
If you are selling your own products or services, sign up for a free account with Paypal. This finance management product works well with eBay.
Anyway, there are all my strings and props. Click here: BlueHost to get off and running. If you have any other suggestions or ideas on how to get started with a website, please add them in the comment box.
Our kids got whooping cough at the hospital. Fortunately we found some information to treat it that kept them from having to be admitted.
While in the family room visiting with friends, we noticed a teenager coughing horribly and pounding his chest for air. We thought he was just a drama king. Later, we learned he was a patient who should not have wandered out of his room.
It started as a tickling little cough that sounded innocent enough. Within a week, our daughter who had started the little cough had stepped up to paroxysms (coughing fits).
What goes from red to blue to gray?
My daughter woke us one morning coughing and gasping for air. I thought she was just overreacting. Then next morning her cough was worse and another child started it.
Whooping cough (pertussis) bacteria strips out all the hair in the throat and bronchial tubes. Once these are gone, any mucus (which you always have) slips down into the bronchial tubes. You gag, breath in, and suddenly have to cough repeatedly to bring up the less-than-exciting subject of excess mucus.
While the child is out of air, he or she coughs repeatedly, turning red in the face, then from lack of oxygen can turn blue, and then from the strain of coughing, turns gray for a second or two. Then comes the trademark “whoop” as the child gasps for fresh oxygen.
The point of no return
Once the hair is gone from the windpipe, you are at the mercy of your wisdom in treating this disease. Figure on facing six weeks of horrible coughing and six months until normalcy returns once those hairs have grown back. In the mean time, there are several things you can do to prevent further problems.
Whooping cough is not a huge problem in and of itself if your children can manage past the lack of air a few times during the night. The danger lies in potential pneumonia, bronchitis, and other issues. Our midwife recommended we give the kids supplements to prevent infection from other diseases getting down into the lungs. We used:
How to kick Whooping Cough quickly
Reading online, we found a post on using sodium ascorbate. While we did not have ready access to this, we found powered Emergen-C to work just as well. The site recommended using as much Vitamin C as a doctor would use antibiotics. Vitamin C is not toxic because it is water-based and will flush out of your body (with diarrhea) if you take too much.
You have to have nerves of steel to keep your kids out of the hospital if they get this nasty monster. Most kids who take antibiotics, however, get all the other nasties like pneumonia and such, afterward.
Read this story of a mother taking a baby through pertussis. Also, search online for “whooping cough” and “sodium ascorbate” together. You will find some very helpful and encouraging information.
When we started using the ascorbate blend (instead of pure ascorbic acid), we saw dramatic reduction in mucus and coughing and cut this disease short. I give honor and credit to my Lord Jesus who carried us through this trying time. I got to know Him and His Word better during those interrupted nights.
Our first full year of homesteading has taught us a lot and challenged us for this new year. Last year, we
- Birthed our first lambs,
- Tripled our garden,
- Planted fruit and nut trees,
- Raised our first pig,
- Got our first horses,
- Slaughtered our first steer, and
- Entered animals at the county fair.
Raising organic, free-range meat on the homestead
We have a freezer full of hormone-free, grass-fed beef. We bought a dairy steer two springs ago just after weaning. We raised on him on the property until slaughtering him about a month ago. Thanks to two helpful neighbors, we got through this process quite simply (but it was work).
Our other little freezer is bursting with deer meat from three bucks we got this season. We have also slaughtered a few lambs this past year, but eat it up about as fast as we get it.
We are definitely happy with the way our meat production has gone. Beef is the easiest thing to raise. Turkeys are the worst, but we plan to try again this year.
The lambs are great, but we messed up the schedule with our ewes. We tried to crank out an extra lamb crop and ended up with false pregnancies. They will probably lamb a little late this year, in May.
Raising organic produce with the best results
We tried an experiment that failed last year (that is one way to get an education). My wife and I have always agreed, we would rather have 20 years experience than one year’s experience 20 times over.
We tried to raise squash in an old pasture. We tilled up the clay soil about 4” and spread leaves and manure. However, you have to till the soil deeper than this and mix in more organic compounds like humus, leaves, mulch piles, and manure. The hard clay soil stunted the growth of these vegetables. The hot summer then killed them faster than we could water.
What did work really well, however, was spreading think piles of manure. We spread composted horse manure about 8” thick. The squash went crazy in it! This set up gave the squash all the moisture, nutrients, and depth it needed to survive. The heat still took its toll, but we got more out of about 200 linear feet of manure heaps than we did out of the acre of clay soil.
Winter gardening for summer bumper crop
Winter gardening is an indoor sport: open the seed catalogs and dream! We know we can do well with broccoli, romaine lettuce, bush beans, peas, tomatoes, peppers, sweet potatoes, winter squash, garlic, herbs, and onions.
We are gardening right now, too—well, sort of. We haul in pickup loads of manure from a horse farm, as often as we can. If we waited until spring, the rain would make the ground too soft to do this.
We are experimenting with growing squash across a trellis this year. Last year we noticed the winter squash growing up the fences and putting on fruit with no problem.
We set up cattle panels in an arch shape about six feet tall. We laid down a matte of leaves and then covered it with turkey manure on either side. Come May, this will all be well-composted but will be thick enough to snuff out most weeds. We will then drill down and plant winter squash seeds in it.
For your info, a bumper crop is a gardening success so great that you have to sell the excess off your bumper on the side of the highway (at least that is what I think it means).
Happy New Year!
For strep throat remedies, we use Children’s Advil and castor oil compresses. We also use natural remedies including vitamin C, A, and D. Proberry also works wonders against the flu and other ailments.
My experience with strep
I once got strep throat so bad the inside of my whole mouth swelled up. My tongue got so thick my teeth left indents on it. My tonsils and throat swelled until I could hardly breathe. My uvula swelled until I was choking on it.
I had to go to the doctor for that one and take amoxicillin. We did not know then (eleven years ago) the strep throat remedies we know now. I have had a few bouts with strep since and have won.
We do not want you to think we are giving anyone medical advice. We only want to share what we found works best and safest for our family. Since children ages 5-15 often get this during the winter months, be ready.
Signs and symptoms of strep throat
Recently, my son had complained of a sore throat. In cold dry air, sore throats can come and go. When he started complaining more and breathing funny, however, I knew we were in for a ride.
Strep throat can begin with pain or difficulty in swallowing. It might also include a slight fever and other cold-like symptoms. In the reddened throat, you might see white patches if it has advanced.
Strep throat can continue to grow and swell the throat lining and tonsils. Oversized tonsils and lymph nodes may cause an earache. It can morph into tonsillitis and even lead to heart problems.
Why we avoid antibiotics
When I took the amoxicillin for a strep throat remedy, it killed my immune system. I kept catching every bug that winter, and the strep throat kept trying to come back. Like most of traditional medicine, it fights the disease with little concern for the human’s well-being. I would rather struggle through an illness and come out with a strong immune system, than to compromise my overall health.
Treating the symptoms
When my son’s throat started hurting when he swallowed, I got scared. I remembered what I had gone through and did not want him to. In prayer, God reminded me the doctor had given me Children’s Advil to help me swallow.
Our midwife (a continual source of health advice) told me strep would only last four to five days. We just had to make him comfortable until he got through it. The Children’s Liquid Advil did the trick to help him swallow and sleep soundly.
You should not give Advil (ibuprofen) for more than two days. We switched him to liquid Tylenol which worked as well. However, the Advil lasted longer and targeted the pain better. Also, Tylenol (acetaminophen) accumulates in the liver quickly. We switched back to Advil after a day on Tylenol—much to his appreciation.
Instead of giving the whole dose, which lasts for 6-8 hours, we gave partial doses. We kept the dose as small as possible and gave it every 2 hours or so.
Why we use castor oil
Our midwife suggested castor oil compresses and we found this to be a miracle among strep throat remedies. We rubbed castor oil on his neck and then placed a warm washcloth, soaked in castor oil, in the same area. Then we put a heat pad on it and kept it warm for at least an hour.
As soon as we started the castor oil treatment, he started spitting out all kinds of phlegm. We did this for two to three times a day. The more mucus he expelled the more the lymph nodes shrunk and pain left.
Some people say apple cider vinegar works this way, too, as one of their strep throat remedies. It never worked for me (remember, I had to see a doctor). I wish I could patent the idea of these castor oil compresses, they draw out infection and even help with cancer.
Target the throat
People recommend doing mouthwashes for strep, so we did. Gargling with Lysterine (the kind with four anti-microbes in it) supposedly kills surface germs. At our midwife’s suggestion, we added a few drops of grapefruit complex to each mouthful.
A pharmacist also told me to keep the saliva flowing. This helps sooth the throat which gets dry quickly and helps kill the germs (you have naturally antiseptic saliva). Instead of giving a child sugary throat drops (which can feed bacteria), we let them suck on a chewable vitamin c. This is a good sore throat remedy as it keeps saliva flowing and boosts immunity at the same time.
Boosting the Immune system
To help our son’s body heal, we gave him as much vitamin C as he could take. You know you have too much vitamin C when it gives you the runs. If you intend to take medicinal doses of vitamin C with your strep throat remedies, we have found calcium ascorbate to be the easiest to digest.
Another immune booster we use is ARA6. This product has the healing power of aloe, but ten times more powerful. You will find it an effective health boost for any condition.
We also use a powerful form of elderberry extract called Proberry. If we had this on hand when the strep started going around, my son probably would not have gotten sick. This stuff kicks the flu and other bugs quickly.
We use natural antibiotics including olive leaf extract, grapefruit complex, garlic oil, and oregano. We followed these with acidophilus to rebuild his healthy bacteria. We also used vitamin E oil, omega 3 oil, and vitamins A and D3 to keep the immune system strong.
Change the diet
If you are fighting any disease, you should cut out all corn products, wheat products (white flower, pasta), dairy, pork, and instant/prepared foods from the diet. This is not medical advice—it is just good sense. Good strep throat remedies will not help if you eat junk. Do not eat sugar or imitation products.
Focus on organic fruits and vegetables. During the worst part of strep, you may only want to sip fruit juices and homemade soup (not from a can) with real broth and vegetables. Make sure you drink plenty of water to flush out toxins (some say scarlet fever results from toxic secretions by strep bacteria).
We are not attempting to tell anyone medical advice for treating strep throat; we are just letting you know what strep throat remedies worked for us.
Years ago, we fought a losing roach battle for many months. Finally, we got rid of cockroaches for good. Short of burning the house down, we could not figure out what to do. We found two things very effective for exterminating the roach population living in our mobile home: diatomaceous earth and a poison gel.
Get rid of roaches with gel poison
You can get rid of roaches quickly if you get serious about the problem when you see the first one. Of course, seeing one roach indicates that you probably already have a hundred. After trying all the products in the pest-killing department, we found a paste poison made by Combat. It comes in a little tube (like a small caulking tube or a big syringe). Squeeze this poison gel in little cracks and crevices where roaches like to build their nests. When they pick this stuff up, they bring it back to the nest and everybody dies. Roaches love it and you can kill of a whole nest quickly.
If that was the only nest in your home, you are now roach free. If you have had roaches for a while, look for more roach nests in any area where there is warmth: around LED lights in microwaves and coffee makers, in vent hoods, under refrigerators, under sinks, buy water heaters and washrooms, and in bathrooms. They will usually set up house within a short distance to a water supply. If you have leaks or standing water anywhere, get rid of it. We had to go through two or three tubes of the Combat roach gel until we defeated our invaders.
Keep rid of cockroaches with diatomaceous earth
This stuff deserves its own blog post. Diatomaceous earth is a white powder full of microscopic razor blades (it comes from a sea creature formation). It will not hurt you unless you inhale it, but it is bloody murder for roaches. When they and other insects walk across the diatomaceous earth, they will get cut up and “bleed” out their body fluids. You will know it is working when you see slow crawling roaches and dead ones lying in the middle of your floor.
Use this to get rid and stay free of roaches for a long time by simply sprinkling the powder anywhere a roach might travel. Pull out your refrigerator and other large appliances and sprinkle this evenly on the floor. No need to heap it up, just give a light dusting. Spread it up onto mopboards and wall trim (if it will not be seen). Sprinkle this liberally under your kitchen and bathroom sinks. If you are building a home, sprinkle it on all your subflooring and inside the framed walls so you never have a bug problem. You might even be able to sprinkle this under your home or around the parameter for the house. You can find diatomaceous earth at some pool supply stores and our local feed store sells it in 50 pound bags.
